THE GREAT RESCUE
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

During my time in the Marines, I learned the Fireman's Carry. During training, Marines practice carrying a wounded brother across rough terrain while exhausted and under time pressure. The injured Marine wasn't expected to help much. His only job was to trust the one carrying him. Rescue happens when a person cannot escape alone. The person being rescued contributes very little except trusting the one who came for him. That's a picture of the Gospel. We aren't merely struggling—we're spiritually lost and unable to save ourselves. There have been seasons in my life when I thought I could carry myself spiritually, only to discover I was exhausted and unable to move forward on my own.
When Paul says we were far away, he isn't talking about physical distance. He's describing spiritual separation. Sin creates a gap between God and us that no amount of church attendance, good deeds, religious activity, or personal discipline can bridge. Left to ourselves, we'd remain separated from God forever.
Yet Christ did what we could never do. Through His death and resurrection, He brought us near to God. Many people spend their lives trying to prove themselves—to employers, families, friends and even to God. The Gospel tells us that our acceptance before God is not based on our ability to perform, but on Christ's finished work. We don't fight for God's approval; we live from it.
The Great Rescue is not simply about forgiveness. It's about adoption, belonging and receiving a new identity. The Gospel changes more than our destination. It changes who we are. We're no longer defined by our failures, regrets, achievements or titles. We are sons and daughters of God. That truth provides a security that no promotion, paycheck or accomplishment can ever provide.
APPLICATION: Spend time in prayer this week, thanking God specifically for rescuing you. Whenever you catch yourself striving to earn His approval, remind yourself that Christ has already accomplished everything necessary to bring you near to Him. Thank Him not only for saving you, but for making you His child.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank You for rescuing me when I could not rescue myself. Thank You for bringing me near through Your sacrifice and welcoming me into Your family. Help me live each day secure in Your love rather than striving to earn what You've already freely given. Amen.
